Science Accelerating Girls' Engagement in STEM (SAGE) is a one week long summer camp for public high school students (age 14-17) hosted by National Laboratory scientists and engineers to share what life in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) professions are like.
This program aims to foster innovation, grow the STEM community, and engage intelligent, creative, and passionate young women in the everyday life of scientists and engineers. Throughout the week, students will participate in job shadowing, hands-on projects, professional development, and more!
In 2024, SAGE at Berkeley Lab will be hosted on-campus from June 10 - June 14.
Short Projects -Each day of the camp, students will spend 2 hours working in one short hands-on projects. These projects will introduce a fundamental concept and allow students to work together to solve a problem that reflects Berkeley Lab mission science. Facilitators will give guidance and help trouble shoot any issues during short project sessions in small groups. Please check out the PROJECT BY DAY list below to see what project/day(s) you'd like to sign up for. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE AN EXPERT IN ANY OF THESE PROJECTS TO FACILITATE. WE WILL TRAIN YOU!
PROJECT BY DAY:
Monday 6/10: Alternative Energy (solar, wind energy)
Tuesday 6/11: Microscopy (possibly held in UC Botanic Garden TBD)
Wednesday 6/12: Robot Day 1 (ultra sonic sensor, coding, Arduino)
Thursday 6/13: Robot Day 2 ( finish wheel assembly and troubleshoot runs)
Time commitment:
1 hour mandatory online training (30 min Mandated Reporter training + 30 min Working with Minors training)
1 to 2 training sessions to go over projects and material (training sessions will take place in April and May)
2 hours/day during the week of camp.
