Who We Are
K-12 STEM Education and Outreach Programs
K-12 STEM Education and Outreach is part of the Government and Community Relations Office at Berkeley Lab. We develop educational programs that connect our researchers and experts with students in the Bay Area. Our aim is to provide opportunities for learning and support the next generation of scientists. Interested in building programming or talking about how your Division can be a part of pre-college programs at Berkeley Lab? Contact the Director of K-12 Programs, Faith Dukes.
K -12 programs are an extension of community outreach and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
These programs exist to excite young people about the expansive world of STEM, engage students in activities that will strengthen their STEM identity, and increase the number of students from underrepresented groups that pursue a STEM major/career.
What We Do
During the summer, Berkeley Lab hosts three (3) high school project and work based summer programs for high school students. These programs aim to provide students with the skillsets and network they need to navigate STEM careers.
The Berkeley Lab Director’s Apprenticeship Program (BLDAP) is a five week project-based high school STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) training program that will provide an opportunity for students to develop 21st century skills, learn about Berkeley Lab’s business and research activities, receive college and career guidance, and develop a STEM network.
Science Accelerating Girls' Engagement in STEM (SAGE) is a one week summer camp for public high school students (age 14-17) hosted by National Laboratory scientists and engineers to share what life in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) professions are like.
This program aims to foster innovation, grow the STEM community, and engage intelligent, creative, and passionate young women in the everyday life of scientists and engineers. Throughout the week, students will participate in job shadowing, hands-on projects, professional development, and more!
Experiences in Research is a research focused internship program for high school students looking to gain hands-on experience with professionals at Berkeley Lab. Students spend six weeks over summer working directly on cutting edge projects alongside experts in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) and STEM adjacent careers. Projects focus on different aspects of STEM professions such as administration, science communications, data science, experimental research, and more.
ALL employees are welcome to support any of the programs listed. K-12 programs seek to reflect all careers that support mission science at Berkeley Lab.
