Empowerment in STEM Day is a one day event on Friday January 20, 2023, for local public high school students. This event; co-hosted by Women’s Support and Empowerment Council (WSEC) and K-12 Programs at the main lab campus, is a chance to share what life in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) professions are like. This is an exciting opportunity to speak with students as they are deciding for themselves what it means to be a STEM professional.
We are seeking volunteers in all lab positions. All genders in STEM and STEM adjacent careers are welcome.
Career Mapping/Speed Networking: We will do a short career mapping exercise (45 minutes) followed by speed networking (45 minutes). We will need about 8-16 volunteers for the career mapping/speed networking session. For this session, you can either volunteer in-person or remotely.
Each volunteer will have about 3-4 students assigned to each volunteer during the career mapping session. Students will begin the map with your "expected" career when you graduated high school and end the map with your current position. You will be asked to share your career story as they map it on sheets of paper. Then, the small group will work together to create a larger map based on their takeaways. Students in groups of 3-4 will move around the room for the speed networking session to take turns to talk to volunteers and learn about their journey to the lab, their work at the lab. We will need about 8-16 volunteers for the career mapping/speed networking session. Each volunteer can choose to volunteer for either one or both the career mapping/speed networking session during the day.
Morning shift starts at 10 am and Afternoon shift starts at 1pm.
