Support hands-on STEM activities for Oakland Summer Town Camp STEM Day

Expired

Description

Berkeley Lab is excited to partner with Oakland's Parks, Recreation & Youth Development Program's Summer Town Camp for another year! The program supports more than 800 young people over the summer by keeping them engaged in activities. This year, our team will continue to engage Oakland youth (ages 6 - 12) through various hands-on STEM activities.

This will be an in-person and outdoor engagement

Dated/Time: Wednesday, June 7, 2023 from 9 am - 3pm

Location: Rotary Nature Building, Lake Merritt  600 Bellevue Ave, Oakland, CA 94610 (Outside)

Parking/Public Transit: Parking will be free. Please bring your badge to show gate staff for free entry.

The location is about 1mile/ 20 minute walk from the 19th street BART. Use the Thomas L Berkeley 20th street exit.

Attire: Casual. Please wear Berkeley Lab shirts and make sure you're wearing comfortable shoes. Hats and sun screen are also recommended.

Activities: We will have four stations set up under tents with activities that should support multiple students at a time. These are all observation activities (light diffraction, bubbles, circuits, microscopes) where students are able to primarily use their senses (sight, touch, hearing) to observe phenomena. We are anticipating at least 600 students over the course of the day. Recreation centers will be staggered.

Volunteers will be asked to support hands-on STEM activity stations:

  • Exploring circuits with Makey-makey
  • Microscopy
  • Spectroscopy Demo
  • Bubbles Festival
  • Periodic Table Exploration

Our colleagues at the Lawrence Hall of Science will also support the day with activities.

Water and snacks will be provided for volunteers.
