Early Career Professionals are needed for an upcoming networking event hosted by the Bay Area Council (a Berkeley Lab Community Partner). They are seeking volunteers to speak to community college students from the Umoja and Puente programs. The conversation will take an informational interview format and will allow students to learn about what it takes to get to their dream job! The event is specifically offered to connect BIPOC students with professionals and I believe that your communities will have a lot to offer this audience - mostly first-generation college students.
Once you are matched with a student, career exploration talks will take place between Oct 11th and October 22nd. Time commitment is expected to be 90-minutes total (three, 30-minutes sessions) scheduled based on your availability. See message below for more details.
The Bay Area Council, in partnership with Valley Vision and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, will be hosting a Career Exploration Event this October to expand students' career horizons/professional networks. This fully virtual event will be held between October 11th to October 22nd with our partners Umoja & Puente. Umoja is a program that principally serves African American & Black identified students in CA community colleges. Puente principally works with educationally underrepresented students from the Latino and Mexican American communities, supporting these students from middle-school through community college.
If you have employee resource / affinity groups at your company, we hope you will reach out to them to get involved. Students have asked to speak specifically with early-career professionals that can relate to their own experiences. Additional information can be found here>>
Unlike most career fairs, Umoja & Puente Career Horizons employs a choose-your-own-time model to accommodate the busy schedules of students and professionals. After a brief kick-off meeting to establish community, volunteer “mentors” will offer three 30-min slots on their calendars for students to sign up for, as well as provide their emails in case students wish to connect again. Given what we know about near-peer mentoring and the importance of expanding business networks for diverse candidates, this is a 90-minute time commitment that will have lasting impact.
